The 5 most expensive mistakes in installing a biological treatment plant (and how to avoid them)

Installing a biological sewage system is one of the most important stages of home improvement in places where it is not possible to connect to city networks. A correctly installed device will last for decades, but even the smallest mistake in the assembly process can lead to unpleasant odors, groundwater pollution and expensive repairs.

So that your investment pays off and everyday life is worry-free, DM Grupa experts have compiled the most common mistakes that people make when choosing and installing a biological treatment device.

1. Ignoring inappropriate location and specifics of the soil

One of the most common mistakes is choosing the location of the equipment without taking into account the terrain, soil type (clay, sand, peat) and groundwater level.

  • High groundwater can lift the equipment out of the ground if it is not properly anchored and adequate land reclamation is not created.
  • Insufficient distance from the building or neighboring borders may violate municipal regulations regulations.
  • If there is no drainage ditch or running water body nearby, where the treated water can be discharged into the sub-drainage, it is necessary to foresee and properly construct the infiltration field in time.

2. Incorrect selection of the size and capacity of the equipment

Purchasing too small or, on the contrary, too large equipment is a big risk for both the wallet and nature protection.

  • A too small equipment will not be able to cope with the large amount of wastewater (especially during the holidays or when there are guests at home), causing overload. as a result of which the necessary bacteria will disappear and the biological process will stop.
  • The capacity of the device should always be calculated individually, taking into account the permanent population and the real water consumption.

3. Use of inappropriate materials and errors in slopes

Sewer installation is not a place to save on the quality of materials, because later repair work will require digging up the entire yard.

  • When installing tracks, the correct class of pipes is often forgotten. It is recommended to use the more durable PVC pipes of the SN8 class, instead of more fragile alternatives that can crack under the weight of the earth.
  • The critical error is the incorrect slope of the trenches and pipes. If the drop is too small, the water will flow slowly and clog the pipes. If the drop is too great, the water will run past the thick masses, leaving them in the pipes. The system must be leveled to the nearest millimeter.

4. "Poisoning" of bacteria with aggressive household chemicals

The heart of the biological plant is living microorganisms (activated sludge) - bacteria that break down organic pollution.

  • Using a large amount of aggressive chemistry (chlorine-containing agents, blue grains, strong pipe and toilet cleaners), these bacteria are literally destroyed.
  • The resulting plant stops to operate, the water is not purified, and a sharp, unpleasant smell appears in the yard. It is important to educate all family members and choose cleaning products that are friendly to biological equipment.

5. Ventilation and aeration disorders

In order for the aerobic purification process to proceed successfully, bacteria need oxygen.

  • The device must provide a continuous air supply with the help of a compressor. If it is turned off, for example, for reasons of economy, the biological process quickly ends.
  • Correct floor ventilation in the building itself is equally important to ensure air circulation and prevent harmful gases (methane, hydrogen sulfide) from accumulating in the system or returning to living spaces.

How to avoid these problems?

The safest way to guarantee a long life of the equipment and flawless operation, is to entrust this work to professionals and choose certified (CE marked) equipment. The DM Grupa team will help you assess the specifics of your property, choose the most appropriate solution and carry out accurate assembly from the first trench to the successful launch of the system.
