The hot tub is a great addition to any garden or terrace. It not only gives the home a sense of luxury and relaxation, but also creates an opportunity to enjoy peace and warmth near nature at any time of the year. However, before proceeding with the installation, it is important to understand that the hot tub is not just an "outdoor bath". It is an engineering system, the weight of which, together with water and people, can reach from 1.2 to even 2 tons.

One of the most common choices faced by new owners is the type of installation: should the

Glass-reinforced plastic (also known as glass-reinforced plastic or GRP) is a composite material consisting of two main components: glass fiber and a binder (usually polymer resin). Put simply, fiberglass is a material in which the fiberglass provides strength, while the plastic (resin) holds these fibers together and gives the product its shape.

shell be integrated into the terrace, or should you choose a freestanding structure? "DM Grupa" has compiled the pros, cons and technical conditions of both solutions to help you make the right decision.

1. A hot tub integrated into the terrace: Elegance, comfort and perfect design

Integrating a hot tub into the terrace is a very popular choice for those who are building a newly built terrace or doing a complete yard improvement and want the recreation area to look like something from an architectural magazine.

Advantages:

  • Excellent aesthetics: The hot tub becomes an organic part of the terrace without overloading the garden landscape and without creating the feeling of heavy structures.
  • Convenient and safe use: Entry and exit is from the terrace level, which is very convenient and safe for children or seniors.
  • Hidden communications: All pumps, massage systems, cables, LED lighting wires and pipes remain hidden under the terrace boards.

Technical disadvantages and what to pay attention to attention:

  • Requires a durable supporting structure: The tub must not "hang" on the terrace boards. Under it, a separate, completely flat and stable base (concrete slab, pavement or compacted rubble cushion) and a supporting structure must be created.
  • Air circulation and drainage: Ventilation must be provided under the wooden structures of the terrace so that moisture evaporates and the wood does not suffer from rot. Drainage with a hose should also be provided so that the released water does not flow directly under the base of the terrace.
  • Service access (Hatches): Access to the mechanisms, nozzles and drain valve must be ensured by providing special inspection hatches in the terrace structure.
  • Safety edge: To prevent accidental falling into the dark, it is recommended not to leave the edge of the tub completely level with the floor, but raise it at least 30-40 cm above the surface of the terrace.

2. Freestanding bathtub: Practicality, mobility and easy maintenance

A freestanding bathtub is a classic and very flexible solution. It is ideal for cases where the terrace has already been built and there is no desire to rebuild it, or when the tub is planned to be placed in a separate area of the garden.

Advantages:

  • Easier preparation of the base: Only a screed, nobCharacterized sealed base is required - pavement, concrete slab or a planned layer of crushed stone on geotextile.
  • Easy maintenance and service: All connections, pumps, filters and drainage tap can be easily accessed at any time.
  • Lower total costs: No need to spend on terrace conversion, frame adjustment or complex carpentry constructions.
  • Mobility: If you decide to rearrange the garden or change the location of the recreation area in the future, a free-standing hot tub is easy to move.

Technical disadvantages:

  • Takes up more visual space: Wooden or plastic decoration and external stairs can look heavier in a small yard.
  • Stair safety: Stairs with anti-slip coating are required for climbing, which must be firmly fixed.

3. Heating and safety in both options

Regardless of which type of installation you choose, the choice and safety of the heating system are equally important.

  • Integrated (built-in) furnace: It is a very popular choice for both built-in and free-standing hot tubs on the terrace. It saves space, looks compact and is easily lit from outside. It is important to remember: the furnace must not be lit without water, as it will damage the shell and elements!
  • External furnace: Perfectly suitable if the hot tub is built into the terrace, but for fire safety reasons the furnace itself wants to be moved outside the terrace area, providing a non-combustible material (stone, metal) around it in a radius of at least 1 meter.
  • Electrical connection: If the hot tub has massage systems, LED lighting or electric heating, the line must be drawn from the switchboard with a separate fuse and a mandatory residual current device (RCD). Wires must be hidden and protected from moisture and mechanical damage.

Summary: Which solution to choose?

  • Choose patio integration if modern and flawless yard design is important to you, you plan to build a circular patio and you are ready to provide a proper supporting base, ventilation and audit hatches.
